It portrays Christ kneeling on the Mount of Olives in prayer, with his disciples Peter, James and John sleeping near him.”(reference Wikipedia). They were supposed to be praying with him not sleeping. The figure stands in front of a cropped un-stretched reproduction of the Bellini painting. The words, “Stay Woke" are stenciled like a political banner. “Woke” is a political term of African American origin referring to a perceived awareness of issues concerning social justice and racial justice. “Stay Woke” refers to a continuing awareness of these issues. Urban Dictionary defines “Stay Woke”, “as to stay awake. ...to stay woke is to keep informed of the sh*tstorm going on around you....and to be aware of the heavily filtered media” This term has fallen into cynical usage in the media, whereby to be” woke” is to be newly aware of social issues and act in a naïve but sympathetic manner regarding those issues. The power struggle is ongoing…… The iconic image was captured by Herald photographer Michael Tubberty. Reference from Wikipedia The cloak is the martyr's cloak. The adolescent reflected in the mirror faces away, as does the adolescent on the chair. Morning light is at odds with the portent foreboding implied in the title. Basic land redress is sought on one wall, while on the other is the misappropriation of tikanga Maori. The figure with the table cloth, reminiscent of the communion veil used to uncover the sacraments, alludes to the fraught position of the missionaries in New Zealand. Many families, including mine, have photos and slides recording these events. Kaonga translates to a time to start digging and planting alluding to the fecundity of Spring. Hanly’s dove, from his series, ‘New Age Woman Golden Age Nocturne New Order 47 Innocence Land’ floats above. Again, a NZ cultural reference is used.
